Fall 2024 - This class is a very easy A. Grading scheme is: participation 15%, midterm 30%, op ed assignment 15%, final (not cumulative) 40%. She offers a few easy extra credit points throughout the quarter, as well as an op-ed revision option. Participation consists of 2 discussion posts for each half of the course on a public health topic, and you can get extra credit by posting 1 additional post for each 1/2 of the course. Exams are open note/internet and can be either taken in the lecture hall or proctored with camera on over zoom. There is also no discussion section for this class, even though there is a discussion listed in MyUCLA. Dr. Shafir is very nice, funny, and a great lecturer, but she does fly through slides pretty quickly. She also gave out a couple PTEs for the class. I would recommend at least skimming through the readings, because some (maybe 2-3 per test) exam questions asked specific things from the readings (kind of just like what the main point was from a certain reading; nothing too detailed) that were not mentioned in lecture. Exams were about 45 multiple choice/true or false/matching questions and you had about an hour to take each exam. Conceptually, this class is easy, the workload is low, and exams are extremely fair. I would highly recommend this class if you need an easy A and/or are intersted in public health.
