PSYCH M163
Death, Suicide, and Trauma
Description: (Same as Sociology M138.) Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Sociological analysis of incidence of violent death. Suicide is eighth leading cause of death in U.S. and third leading cause for young people aged 15 to 24. Both kinds of violent deaths are often dismissed as extreme psychopathology, reflecting individual mental health issues. Sociologists argue that suicide and homicide are social facts. Suicide and homicide do not occur randomly in society but are stratified according to social factors such as age, gender, race, sexual orientation, and class. Analysis of strength of this sociological argument and evaluation of explanatory potential of different theories to make sense of violent death, paying particular attention to forensic and medicolegal system to determine suicide and solve homicides. Review of historic and contemporary studies to examine how research and conceptualizations of suicide and homicide have changed, as well as social responses to these phenomena. P/NP or letter grading.

Evalv for LS 2: Schein rushes through a lot of his lectures, and when he's short on time, he will practically have a speed race with himself to see how fast he can read the words off the slides and hit the "next" button. Don't expect to learn a lot in class, so make sure you read the book. Midterms were pretty hard, I'd say; we would have to know very particular details about the systems, and even when I felt fully prepared for them, I would look at his questions and be confused...He was also a bit of a creep when dealing with girls, so beware. Overall, try to avoid Schein for LS2 if you can, but if you have to take him, then be prepared to work hard.

Fall 2018 - Great class about all sorts of death that you wouldnt want yourself to be in. Learnt a lot about how different types of death is treated by society as well as the histories behind some of them. Given that Timmermans is a sociology professor, the demands, style and content of this class is quite different from the usual psychology class. Much more focused on ideas, readings and theories and less so on experimental data. if you have some morbid interest in deaths and dying, it is definitely a fun and informative class to take
