Description: Lecture, three or four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Designed for juniors/seniors. Survey of modern Chinese politics from decline of Manchu dynasty and rise of revolutionary nationalism to death of Mao Zedong, with emphasis on socioeconomic foundations and political dynamics of revolution in modern China.

Winter 2017 - THIS CLASS IS NOT GPA FRIENDLY. The professor warned us at the beginning of the class to read the reviews here before continuing with the class. I was under the impression it would be tough but worth it. There is a midterm, research paper, and a final. However, if you are not willing to prioritize this class over your others don't expect to receive an A and don't be surprised if you don't receive a B. He prides himself on the fact that despite his harsh grading scale, you take away a lot from the class in terms of morality. I can attest he is one of the few professors who's lighthearted, funny, and a caring individual. Unfortunately, that doesn't matter when majority of the class is in the range to receive a C or fail. Many people ended up dropping, so just be aware of what you're getting into.
