PHYSICS 150
Physics of Charged-Particle and Laser Beams
Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Requisites: courses 1A, 1B, and 1C (or 1AH, 1BH, and 1CH), 110A, 110B, 115A, 115B. Physics of charged-particle and laser beams presented as a unified subject. Basic physics of charged-particle beams, covering relativistic particle motion in electromagnetic fields, transverse focusing, acceleration mechanisms, linear and circular accelerators, and advanced topics. Some fundamentals of laser physics, including gain and broadening mechanisms, linear light optics, laser resonators, and advanced topics and applications. P/NP or letter grading.

Professor Pellegrini is not a bad lecturer. Yeah, he has an accent, but it never bothered me. His tests were not bad at all, and very generously graded. When the class did poorly on the midterm, he actually scheduled another one so that we would not all have terrible grades. More relevant homework, meaning homework that was not straight from the textbook and instead closely tied in to what we actually learned in class would really have helped. Okay lecturer, generous grader, and just generally laid back about everything. Good for a senior who is anxiously awaiting graduation.

Don't take phys 150. Dropped the class at the last minute, as did others. Didn't need the class, signed up because it sounded interesting and this guy is a big deal in his field. The class was not interesting at all, turns out. The lectures were incomprehensible (he lectured for 2 days on what everyone thought was an electron beam. Had to learn from the T.A. it was a laser). I'm no physics slouch, but this was too hardcore for me. Consider yourself warned.
