Mechanical Mind and Mindlike Machinery: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Consciousness
Description: Seminar, one hour. Interdisciplinary introduction to philosophical, cognitive, biological, and technical underpinnings of human mind and artificial intelligence technology. Philosophical arguments and cognitive theories on nature of consciousness and intelligence. Similarities and differences between architecture of brain and of "thinking" machines. Consideration of ethical dilemmas and societal impacts in use of intelligent machines. Analysis and evaluation of past, current, and future artificial intelligence technologies, their representation in media and art, and their potential for achieving conscious behavior. P/NP grading.
