Maternity Nursing
Description: Lecture, three hours; clinical, six hours. Requisites: courses 150A, 150B, 152W, 160, 174. Corequisite: course 173. Nursing assessment and management for selected acute and emergent problems in maternity/newborn patients, with emphasis on social, cultural, and developmental influences. Integration of basic knowledge of pathophysiology, diagnostics, pharmacology, therapeutic interventions, and communication concepts as applied to childbearing families, with application of nursing process, evidenced-based practice, problem-solving strategies, and critical thinking. Supervised clinical practicum experience within setting of multidimensional team, with focus on application of theory in clinical interpretation of assessment and diagnostic data for purpose of planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for maternity/newborn patients. Intermediate-level assessment, health maintenance, and management of symptoms in this population. Letter grading.
