OMG Professor Chapman is soooooo cool! I can;t believe I was totally drawn into a music class......me being a physics major. The in class concerts are so great and the course material is interesting. You will learn a lot about music and get a feel for what music really is without having to dig into music notation if that's not your cup of tea. Highly recommended!

The class is relatively easy. If you do well on the Concert Reports you'll do well in the class since it gives you a nice cushion. Her tests can be tricky and i recommend going to class since there is no book. She put the notes online for my quarter which helped alot but if she doesn't than you NEED to go to lecture. LISTEN to her "listening assignments" as much as possible - 75% of the tests are listening questions (She plays the song and you have to identify something about it). Lastly, no one goes to the "guest lecture/performance" half of class (she has an hour lecture and an hour performance). It's a pain but i would stay and pay attention to those - on the final she had about ten-twelve questions just about those that a lot of people got wrong because no one stays for that part.

The Art of Listening is the university's way of calling it Music Appreciation. For a class that you just appreciate music, it was definitely harder than it sounds. Hall is so weird. He is blunt about a lot of things and makes a lot of funny remarks that are probably inappropriate. His lectures are kind of scattered but just take nokes on what he says because they do come in handy. His class is a lot of little details that come from his lectures and the book. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE BOOK! Especially the little dark gray boxes that talk about composers. On his midterm and final, he has a lot of questions about the composers like "Where was this composer born?" He also loves questions about the musical periods and the songs they play. In his class, there was a performance every Wednesday during the last half of class. Make sure you go because he likes to test off of the performances like what instruments were played during so and so's performance or who was the composer of this song. His midterm is 100 multiple choice/true and false questions and his final was 200 of those. read the book and listen to the songs. make sure you know who they are by, what the sound like, what period they are from and things like that. he usually gives 3 multiple choice questions about every song on the CD and some that he plays in class! It is crucial you go to discussion. I had a TA where you just show up and write your name on her roll sheet and you got 5 points for the day. Those are 50 easy points! There are 3 music critiques for the quarter. You need to go to 3 performances throughout the quarter and write what you liked and disliked about it but you also have to add musical terms from the book so you look like you know what youre talking about. It is a straight scale class! NO CURVE! It is based on total points. 450-425 is an A+, 424-400 is an A, 375-399 is an A- and so on. Don't worry if you dont do so well on the midterm just do well everywhere else and you'll be fine. I got a C- on the midterm but got an A- in the class. (I got 171/200 on the final) If you know a lot about music, like facts and composers, this class will be a breeze. If you're not so musically inclined, it will be harder.

Winter 2016 - If you are looking for an easy A GE, this course is no longer the case. Last year, every student has 49% of the final grade devoted to homework portion, which is an online quiz system that can be repeated several times to get 100%. This year, 10% is for attendance and 90% is for exams. So if you don't spend time studying this course, you can't get an A. If you have some background in music, you probably end up with an A-. Here is some stats: Last year: | This year 97+ A+ 33 | 3 93+ A 85 | 58 91+ A- 39 | 59 And he misleadingly wrote to us that "If you are above 88, you are in good shape." for the first midterm. I thought he would curve the class to give the same amount of A, but it turned out that I was so wrong about this and I should really PNP this class before it was too late. Remember 5 units have a huge impact on your GPA. For every physical science and engineering majors: IT'S STUPID TO WASTE YOUR GPA ON THIS CLASS!!!!!! However, if you do PNP, you don't need to study at all to pass this course. Oh BTW, I talked about the distribution issue with the professor, and he mentioned that students from Winter 16 performed better. Wow! But students with better performance received lower grades!!!! He refuse to accept this fact. I suggest him to cap the maximum score to somewhere slightly lower than 100 to boost everyone's grade slightly. For example, if I score 90 / 100 in the exam, I would receive 94.7% of the score if the max score were set to 95. This is a very common strategy in math classes using absolute grading scheme. However, he refused to change anything. I feel sorry for myself and for every other one who took the class this quarter. You should have taken it in Winter 15. LoL.

I took Arts and Architecture 10 (course option wasn't given in drop-down menu) I would absolutely NOT recommend this course to anyone. It is not an easy A unless you're an athlete. You learn nothing, and after having memorized several pointless, non-coherent facts, chances are you won't get the grade you deserve. Take any other more fulfilling GE course. The professor is extremely biased -- students involved in sports that missed several lectures received A+'s, while students that attended every singly lecture religiously and went to the review sessions got B's or lower. It's was painful having to sit through the unstimulating, long lectures, and his pompous attitude only added to my displeasure of taking the course. Discussions are even worse. Suck up hard to the TA is my only advice, I personally got screwed over by mine.
