Critical, Cultural, and Social Theory
Description: Seminar, three hours. Designed for graduate musicology, ethnomusicology, and music students. Introduction to issues surrounding music as social, cultural, and historical practice, with strong emphasis on critical, cultural, and social theory. May include introduction to social theory, materialist theories of culture, postcolonialism, critical theory, or overview of cultural theory or of group of theories selected by instructor, including feminism, performance studies, sociology, historiography, urban studies, anthropology, philosophy, psychoanalysis, poststructuralism, gender, race, and sexuality studies, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer studies, disability studies, and so on. Introduction to set body of theory in its relation to study of music. Letter grading.
