Mathematics of Engineering
Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, two hours; outside study, six hours. Requisite: Mathematics 33A. Recommended requisite: course M20. Methods of solving ordinary differential equations in engineering. Review of matrix algebra, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors. Solution of systems of first-order ordinary differential equations using matrix methods. Introduction to Laplace transforms and their application to ordinary differential equations. Introduction to boundary value problems, partial differential equations, and separation of variables. Letter grading.

Spring 2020 - He is incredibly kind and caring for his students, but was rarely helpful. When students asked questions in lecture or office hours, the answers were frequently long-winded or merely repetition of confusing initial explanations. He encouraged students to visit him during office hours and to email him with questions, but few, if any, students seemed to find these helpful. There were significant technical issues throughout the quarter: even in a final review, I heard that the professor accidentally left during the middle of the session. Chatterjee lectured using slides that were both disordered and filled with errors. He struggled with pacing, at times speaking too quickly for students to follow and at times moving incredibly slowly. He clearly knows the class material well, but doesn't seem to understand what material students will struggle with or be able to provide alternate explanations. Homework answers are provided with assignments but are frequently incorrect. The homework is generally good preparation for exams, but some assignments were difficult more because of ridiculous integrations than implementing concepts. This class was a lot of stress and I didn't feel like I learned anything by the end of the quarter. The textbook was generally more helpful than lectures in understanding differential equation concepts, but exams often featured conceptual equations answered in class.

Fall 2020 - By far the best professor I've had at UCLA. Went the extra mile to help students wherever possible. Gave generous deadlines if you're behind on your hw. Not the easiest course material (not to mention the extra MATLAB work) but he tries his best to make it interesting and understandable and succeeds. All of the exams and homeworks have real-world based problems instead of contrived math so it gets a little complicated but at least it's not all mind numbing math. Wish I could take all my classes with this guy. Absolute GOAT professor!

Spring 2023 - Great class. The professor is clear and works well with the TA. The lectures and discussion go hand-in-hand and if you complete his worksheets then you will not need to dedicate extra time for the same course. He also vouches for everyone to score higher so curving the grade is always on the table :)

Fall 2021 - Prof Lin was a fun time. I won't lie, he isn't the most superb professor I've had, since sometimes he went over content quite fast. However, he mostly explained concepts well(although lectures were a bit disengaging at times), and he's always willing to explain concepts to s students. Grading was pretty generous, Lin and his TAs give quite a bit of partial credit in midterms and tests. There are quizzes on weeks that we don't have midterms, holidays, or the final (5-6 a quarter). Midterms and the final were fair. Not super easy but definitely doable. The homework was interesting. Homework is never due, and you never got answer keys, but the quizzes would literally be 2-3 homework problems. If you did them right in the HW, it would be pretty easy to get a high score on the quiz. I recommend doing the homework with friends and making sure your answers match, so the quizzes are easy points. The other thing I loved about this class is how much of a "dad" vibe prof gives. He seems a little clueless at times(he isn't) which is kind of funny, and he dresses like a typical Asian dad. Occasionally he'll crack a dad joke, and on Halloween, he even brought us all candy. It's clear he cares about his students though. Overall I'd say this was a pretty solid class, and I'd take it again with this professor!

He has a sign-in sheet and attendance accounts for part of the grade but people only show up to sign in (or well to sign in their 12 friends) because his lectures are near impossible to understand through his disorganization. He allows you to resubmit homework assignments to correct mistakes, but as the workload piles up each week it becomes hard to finish the assigned homework in the first place. The homework heavily relies on matlab, but that isn't even part of the curriculum and you're expected to learn it yourself. His exams are open note open book, but they are still extremely difficult and the take home midterm legit takes around 24 hours of straight work to solve. Overall the worst thing is that he submitted half of the class to the dean for cheating on the take home midterm with 0 basis and delayed the grades. Clearly, if he truly believes that half the class cheated on the assignment then something must be wrong.
