Be careful, this guy is prematurely senile. In reality, he's probably only 55 or so, but he shuffles and mumbles and rambles like he's 90. I completely would not trust his grading. My roommate and I took AIDS the same quarter, and got almost the same score on the midterm, did the same community service together, and both did pretty well on the final, yet got drastically different grades. The fact that the tests are scantron actually makes it harder because you have to remember which insignificant details he chose to point out about a certain topic, and whether he was talking for 30 minutes about something because it is true, or because it's a misconception.

Course Taken: LS4 Prof. Chen was a decent professor. I'll go over the pros and cons: Pros: -When she explains something in class, she always asks if everyone understands and in the past has supplemented our questions with new examples. Don't be afraid to ask questions in lecture, as there is a high probability that someone else has the same question -She gives practice finals and midterms. For me, these worked great for studying. The one thing I would recommend doing is not just understanding the problem, but branching off and seeing how you can change it. (My TA was great at this) -In lecture she was very friendly and easy going -She gives blatant hints in class about specific things 'you should study' (aka will be on the exam) Cons: -I never went, but I heard office hours with her were frustrating. -The practice midterms she gave tended to be deceivingly easy. Our exams were significantly more complex than the practice, but again expanding on the problems worked best. -Occasionally she was unclear about a few points in her lecture. Although it was seldom there were times where you could see her getting frustrated at us not getting it because she was explaining things the same way over and over again. Overall, I feel like this class was not a breeze. LS4 will require studying and practice problems, but if you take it with Chen I would recommend getting a good understanding as the exam questions are not always simple problems.

I had her for LS4, as for lectures, it was a little annoying that we bought the course reader when she ended up putting the powerpoints online. the course reader had tiny writing with black and white pictures when sometimes the colors on her slides were useful in understanding them. its easier that its webcasted so you can rewatch the lectures. my TA was amazing, always answered whatever questions i asked. To do well, you should read the book (it helps you understand the course reader better sometimes), read the course reader (make sure you actually know whats going on in transcription, translation, not just the general idea) if you put in the time, it's do-able

This is class was not a easy GE course. I study hard for the midterm and and final and I got a overall grade B. The finals and midterms were all graded by the TAs so if you have a bad TA like me, you are in bad shape. Another thing about this class is that 12 hours of community service is require. So, if you don't do the 12 hour of community service it will be a big impact on your grade.
