Description: (Same as Middle Eastern Studies M142.) Lecture, three hours. Examination of evolution of Israel--its changing society, volatile domestic and foreign politics, and dynamic culture--from its foundation in 1948 to present, in context of global political and cultural change and changing Jewish world. Tension between Israel's conception of itself as Jewish state and fact that it is home to wide variety of ethnic and religious groups and to great diversity of cultures; that it was envisaged as safe haven for Jewish people but has been characterized by insecurity and ongoing war; that, founded as democracy, it contends with multiple strains on its democratic system, such as tensions between Jews and Arabs, secular and religious Jews, and disparate ethnic groups. Summer 2023 - During an exchange on Twitter where links to articles proved his admiration of George Soros leads to 'a house divided', since Soros institutions still provide millions in donations to antiSemitic & anti-Israel groups etc, he went berserk, sending multiple tweets referring to me as a Nazi, a coward....and ugly! (imagine that lol). https://twitter.com/IsraelandStufff/status/**********860608512 For an educator on Jewish Studies to throw an uncontrolled tantrum, to become so defamatory and libelous instead of just saying he "disagrees" is an overt signal, worthy of the reassessment of his character and ability to teach in a safe & peaceful atmosphere. We already know of his disreputable behavior with/towards women, now he's attacking a 70-year-old son of Survivors and 30 yr veteran defending Israel in uniform. My apologies for posting above I was a student...when I was not.
