Nogami-sensei is, needless to say, one of the best Japanese teachers that you would ever meet. Not only in UCLA, but just in general. She makes the most of the 50~75 minutes/day and makes interesting comments and jokes here and there to drag everyone in to make things memorable, and to make you feel like you're actually in the class. Her memorization skills are amazing, as she uses grammar and vocabulary only to the point that you learned. True, she may be a hard grader when it comes to presentations and such, but her chapter tests are, overall, fair.

Winter 2022 - I took Nogami sensei for J4 and J5, and while her teaching style stressed me out to no end it was the kind that I needed. Nogami teaches the entire class in Japanese, and it’s a little over an hour of her asking questions and calling on students randomly to respond. You’re expected to be familiar with the grammar and vocabulary before class, and be able to utilize it when speaking. However, she utilizes the vocabulary and grammar you’ve learned up to that point and hearing it used in conversation over and over really helps it stick to memory. It’s complete immersion and terrifying, but insanely helpful. If you know you won’t learn a language unless you’re absolutely forced to, this is the class for you. She assigns all the workbook pages for the chapter at once, but it’s only due every few weeks. The tests are easy to prepare for once you know what you need to study. This class isn’t for everyone and it’s challenging, but if you put in the effort you will be rewarded.

Winter 2021 - Schricker clearly cares a lot about her students' success. She is very patient with her students and goes out of her way to provide resources for them to use. I had her during COVID and she let us correct our homework and resubmit for a higher grade as many times as it took for us to learn the materials. She taught using powerpoint slides and made grammar videos for us to watch and take notes on for homework. Our homework consisted of weekly short video responses to provided prompts, grammar and kanji worksheets, and turning in the notes. It was a bit tedious but I feel like I learned a lot. Quizzes were a bit tough but she gave us multiple tries and took the highest score. There were also a couple extra credit opportunities. She responded to emails promptly and was overall very communicative. She even created a little anonymous feedback box and took our suggestions seriously. I've never felt more cared for as a student than when I was taking her class. She is a very energetic and fun professor and I enjoyed her class very much!
