Professor Sugamoto is the cutest and sweetest professor I will ever have at UCLA. She has very concise and explanatory lectures on powerpoint, and lectures are lots of fun. She's very good at involving students into the lecture, and has fun activities to help learn. Take her to enjoy an excellent Japanese course!

Fall 2015 - Professor Takakura keeps the class interesting by adding a lot of contemporary pop-culture to the class such as anime, news, and lectures on the differences between Japanese and American dating habits. We had group projects that were fun that also made us learn valuable skills that we could put to use for future projects. I enjoyed Professor Takakura's way of teaching because she always used humor and expressed a kind open heart. I highly recommend this class. I also recommend that in order to succeed in this class it is wise to always come to class prepared by reading and studying the assignments before class.

Spring 2024 - As long as you dedicate the right amount of time to it each week, this class shouldn’t be any more difficult than J2 or J1. Homework assignments were usually just textbook exercises due every monday and the occasional other assignment. Quizzes were straightforward (Kanji and Vocab) and the lowest two were dropped. I’d say the most difficult part of the course is the midterm and final, as I felt like I didn’t have enough time to finish despite knowing the answers. Time has never been an issue for me on any exam before, so even u fast test takers beware. Professor Takeuchi was extremely kind and cared so much about students learning and did her absolute best to guide us through such a difficult language to learn. Would absolutely have loved to continue to Japanese courses with Professor Takeuchi if I wasn’t graduating!

Spring 2024 - I took the placement test and was placed into J3. The class was generally very engaging and fun. Taylor Sensei is a very kind professor for a beginner's Japanese class. We watch lecture videos before going to class and practice in class. The course contains three chapters. The workload is reasonable for a language class but time-consuming. Taylor Sensei is very helpful during office hours. She tries to assist you when you ask and is very understanding about different situations. She is very generous with points during the oral exam. Overall, this is a very fun class. I would 100% recommend taking a class with Taylor Sensei. I don't know if this is important for anyone, but I took the 9 am session and there weren't a lot of people who took the very early course. However, because there weren't many people, the class sessions were very engaging, and you'll basically know everyone in the class by the end of the quarter.
