Description: Lecture, five hours. Not open to students who have learned enough Indonesian to qualify for more advanced courses. Coverage of basic Indonesian grammar, with equal emphasis on reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. P/NP or letter grading.

Fall 2024 - INDO1 covers the foundations and basics of Indonesian language, it is assumed you're starting from 0. That being said, if you have Indonesian already under your belt, this class will be a breeze. Even as a partial Indo speaker, took this class to fulfill my foreign language requirement and make sure my foundations in Indonesian are better for speaking. Professor Wijaya (we call her Bu, you'll learn it as an Indonesian honorific) is very kind and helpful as an instructor. Even if you get lost in the class (because learning a new foreign language at this age is not easy), she'll help you out a lot. The class is also small with an average of around 15 students, so you'll get to know everyone including Bu Wijaya much better. There might be opportunities to even have class dinner with her, I recommend going to Simpang Asia! The class focuses on formal Indonesian, but she'll also teach colloquial (nonformal) Indonesian that you would use with friends rather than elders. She's also great at teaching Indo and assessing dialect so that we hopefully sound less like foreigners to native Indonesians. You'll learn a bit about Indonesian history and facts on the side, which I find really interesting. Since this class covers a lot of vocabulary, I recommend making flashcards and doing spaced repetition with them to keep your vocabulary fresh and not blank out like I sometimes do with certain words. Simple grammar/sentence structures will also be covered, so it's just a matter of practice through the textbook and handouts she gives. Overall, Indonesian is an underrated language. Whether you're looking to strengthen your Indonesian foundations or just need to fulfill a foreign language requirement, I highly recommend taking Indo with Bu Wijaya!
