Introduction to Western Civilization: Circa A.D. 843 to circa 1715
Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, two hours. Broad, historical study of major elements in Western heritage from the world of the Greeks to that of the 20th century, designed to further beginning students' general education, introduce them to ideas, attitudes, and institutions basic to Western civilization, and acquaint them, through reading and critical discussion, with representative contemporary documents and writings of enduring interest. P/NP or letter grading.

Winter 2022 - This class is the easiest GE I've ever taken. Actually, maybe one of the easiest classes I've taken in general (like easier than highschool AP Euro (although tbf AP Euro was a lot)). There were three HW assignments and one essay for the whole quarter, and each HW assignment took about 10 minutes to complete. The writing assignment took a little bit longer, but it was *basically* a watered down DBQ. Discussion sections have "required reading" but you really don't need to read anything in order to get by, as long as you come prepared with something to say (or not, you could just wing it and get full points). All in all, incredibly easy class 10/10 five stars 3 thumbs up

Winter 2022 - If you care about your GPA, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The way it is graded makes it near impossible to get an A, if you miss a single point in the class you will get an A- at best. This was not specified on the syllabus anywhere nor explained at any point during this class even after the grades were sent out. The workload of this class was probably the least of any of my classes at UCLA so far and all of it is rather easy. This means your entire grade basically comes down to your TA and, as always, some just gave 100s on every assignment while others were extremely harsh about rough drafts, essays, and participation. Overall, if you just want a super easy GE that you're gonna pass, this is the one to take. However, the grading system is extremely confusing and poorly communicated and getting an A is next to impossible unless you luck out and your TA give you 100s on everything. I would not take again.

Fall 2023 - while not a very easy class, the prof. is pretty good. the main positives of the class are as follows: no tests, lectures are engaging, slides are posted, lectures a recorded, and attendance in lecture is not mandatory. you do have to write two papers (one 1000 words and the other 2000 words), but aside from that, there is very little additional work. it is not exactly an easy GE, but it is not too difficult and would highly recommend, especially if you are interested in the topic.
