Before taking this class, I wasn't especially interested in African history and just took this class because I had a very limited schedule and was one of the only upper div history classes that fit. This class got me really fascinated by it and I now can't wait to take more African history classes. The class also wasn't too hard - one midterm, a paper and a final which were graded reasonably easily. Professor Alpers is very knowledgable, a great lecturer and also a really nice guy. Highly recommended!

Fall 2023 - Professor Wint is very reasonable. She assigns weekly readings that are slightly excessive but is doable. You will have a quiz almost every week. The answers to the quiz will come from her lectures. She posts slides but the majority of the information you need for the quiz will be provided during her in-class lectures so make sure to attend and take notes. She offered one extra credit assignment which was a short essay if you wanted to improve your midterm exam score. While she is reasonable, she is not very clear on her expectations for assignments. Attend her office hours to find out what she expects from an assignment or else you might be slightly confused and lose points. Overall, she is a good professor. Her class will not ruin your quarter but the class is not an easy A either. However, getting an A or a good grade overall is very doable.
