I've taken derby for both History 8A and History 161. There is a really big difference in the way she teaches a huge lecture as opposed to a smaller class. I have to say that I really enjoy the way she brings in multimedia, films, music, art, to back up her lectures. While she can be disorganized, her lectures are not entirely the put you to sleep kind. Also if you go to her office hours, she will really help you with your papers. As with many professors, what you see is not always what you get. she is very intelligent and she can read through your bullshit.

I really enjoyed Professor Matsumoto's Asians in American History class. She is extremely knowledgeable, well-organized, intellgent, and caring. I've found myself considering a minor in Asian American studies because of this class. There are two exams (two midterms - one of which is the final, or "second midterm"), and she gives us a study guide a week before. She'll choose three out of the 6 questions on the day of the exams, and out of the three, you have to write 2 essays. Essays are not so hard. Make sure you pay attention to the lectures and do the readings, and you should be fine. If there are any classes offered by Prof. Matsumoto in the coming quarters, I would definitely take her again. Highly recommended!! :)

Spring 2019 - I had Summerhill for Modern Brazil last quarter and I loved him so I took him again for this class. He is a great professor but I found this class to be quite challenging just because I had a hard time keeping up with which country is doing what. The material is kind of a lot in this class because all of Latin America is quite broad and difficult to keep straight. Summerhill does a good job of teaching and kept me engaged through lectures. He also had all of the readings except one posted online so you don't have to pay a fortune for books. He's an outstanding lecturer, the class can just be a little tricky because of how broad it is.
