I took Hist 161 with Derby and she's a total sweetheart. She does have the tendency to trail off in the middle of sentences and can sometimes be hard to follow, but you get the general themes she trying to express and the class overall was not too difficult. It consisted of a take-home midterm and a take home-final which she gave out weeks in advance and you had a choice of prompts. She loves tons of examples from the books she assigns and shes a pretty lenient grader. I personally loved the class.

I was a straight A student until I took this class. I got a B+. I'm not necessarily saying Lydon is a bad teacher but she's definitely not a very effective one. I attended every single lecture without missing a day. If you have ever taken this class you would understand what an accomplishment that is. Her lectures are boring, dry, and straight off of a powerpoint. It appears that she doesn't really care about her students. She has favorites in the class and it's pretty obvious. I took the class when she did not have a TA and I guess she has high expectations and grades pretty tough. That is pretty ironic considering how ineffective her teaching is.

This professor shouldn't teach. Altough he is very knowledgable and has decades of experience, he is never available to students, isn't concerned about our learning, and definitely can't express his passion for the subject. He dumped lectures on the guest speaker (each class) and interraction with students on TAs, which also had to record attendance of the office hours. During the entire winter quarter, he has spend less than 10 hours total in the classroom with us.

This class was terrible. This is the first C I ever received in a History course. I took very good notes and worked hard on the paper but basically wants you to write a dissertation on World War II history. Please avoid this class. The professor was terrible as well, I've gotten more excited watching paint dry. Avoid this class!
