Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Survey of later history of China--evolution of characteristic Chinese institutions and modes of thought from circa 1000 to 2000. Focus on social, political, intellectual, cultural, and economic aspects of early modern regimes and empires and rise of modern China into contemporary era. P/NP or letter grading.

Professor Bernhardt was the one of the best professors I've had in UCLA. Even though her lectures were kinda early for me, 9:30, I still tried to make it to every single one of them not because I was scared of missing stuff that might be on the midterm, but because I really enjoyed her lectures. Her lectures were very interesting and funny. She sure woke me up every Tues and Thurs mornings. I highly recommend taking her Chinese History 11B class! She makes you see things from different perspectives too, which is what studying history should be like.

Professor Garavente is overall a pretty good professor. His lectures are interesting, but I felt like it was a lot of information presented within one class period. The reading can be a lot if not spread within a few days. However, the reading is mainly supplementary. The key to this class is GOOD LECTURE NOTES. Take down every detail during lecture. These notes and the handouts he gives during class are what you should study. The mini tests were tough since they were very specific. The thing I liked was that he gave us study guides for both the midterm and final, so no curveballs. This is NOT an easy GE, but if you love history, especially Chinese history, you will be fine. It is do-able, just pay attention during lecture.

Winter 2018 - Professor Goldman is very nice and helpful, but the class is a lot of work. I had Xiaowen as a TA and she was extremely caring. There is a ton of reading and two midterm papers along with a final. If you actually do the readings, it will take up a lot of time every week. However, if you work hard, you should do okay grade-wise. I got As on both papers. The study guide is very long and stressful to fill out but the terms/questions given on the final are reasonable. Selling all books (and will provide printouts of online readings if you wish) for $20. Text **********
