Description: Lecture, three hours. Enforced requisite: course 140 or Linguistics 20. Taught in English with German proficiency required. Problems in structure of Dutch and German, considered from theoretical frameworks such as sign-oriented linguistics, functional linguistics, discourse grammar, and cognitive linguistics. Discussion of formal linguistic approaches. Concurrently scheduled with course C142. Graduate students meet as group one additional hour each week and write research papers of greater length and depth. Letter grading.
