The CA class with Clark is great for the first half, especially if you are a CA native. It's interesting to hear all the things you kind of knew about the state be reaffirmed by a bunch of academics (Clark has a lot of guests for the first few weeks). But once he starts lecturing himself, get ready for nonstop slides of graphs, charts, and data sets. His work focuses on immigration, so that's what you hear about the most. He often takes an hour or two to explain the same thing, over and over. Many other people in the class felt the same as I. There is a miterm, a final, and 3 page (single spaced) "research paper," in which you are supposed to get some data about CA and analyze some sort of problem (your choice). Not too hard. But don't take this class for the reeeeally easy A you were expecting, you will actually have to review and study a bit for the exams.

Spring 2018 - Professor Herrera is the best. I had him for Geog 3 as well and I liked him so much that I took this class with him as well. I'm bummed that he isn't teaching any other Geog classes. He truly cares about each and everyone of his students. It is clear that he wants everyone to succeed. As long as you do the readings, show up to class and interact with other students and with Professor Herrera you'll do great. This was one of the few classes where the entire class (around 80 students) felt more like a community rather than the typical anonymous and unsocial lectures where everyone is in their own world. He listens to student feedback and genuinely wants his class and content to make sense, be helpful and understandable. Take a class with him if you can. He's amazing.

Professor Illes is a great teacher and very knowledgeable of California. I loved her class as it provided me a deeper insight to the state we live in. Her class grading is based on a midterm (in calss), long essay (you have to visit the place), and final. She is fair and fun. If you want to learn about California take her. Attendance is mandatory as the midterm and final are based on those notes you take. So you must be a good note taker to take her class.
