Studies in Francophone Cultures and Literatures
Description: Lecture, three hours. Enforced requisite: course 5. Taught in French. Study of Francophone cultures and literatures, including works by poets, playwrights, and novelists from Caribbean, North Africa, Quebec, and sub-Saharan Africa, immigrant narratives, and colonialism and postcolonial studies. May be repeated for credit with topic change. P/NP or letter grading.

Professor Carron is absolutely wonderful! He's very entertaining and likes to facilitate class discussions. He's also very flexible, and allowed us to choose whatever topic we wanted for our essay. There were also two exams, both of which he prepared us well for. He always held review sessions and let us know what would be on the test so there were no unfair surprises. I really enjoyed his class! It was not only fun to attend, but he also had a great personality and was very approachable. I would highly recommend him in the French department. Very fair, very entertaining, very worthwhile course.

Prof. Mabanckou's French 121 - Studies in Francophone Cultures and Literatures was mainly focused on Rwanda and the 1994 genocide. Prof. Mabanckou teaches in French, is very approachable, and has a great ability to keep the class' attention by using humor and story telling. He is very knowledgeable and helpful in preparing for Midterm and advising for graduate studies. There was no midterm and no final...just a 6-8 page paper, instead. The assigned reading is paramount if you want an A. Count on reading approx. 50-100 pages per week. there were only 3 books for the quarter. If you can pay attention in class, take good notes, and are willing to do the readings, this is an easy A.

I wish he had more office hours! It was only once a week and I had work during his office hours and it was hard for me to get off and go see him. But the two times i tried going, he was off at a meeting. Seems like he has A LOT of meetings. Pretty frustrating. Otherwise, he's a EASY grader of essays. My essay was full of grammer mistakes and somehow i ended with a B+. I would have given myself a C. It's great. If you're a girl, and i know you are because the French major has like 98% females, take this guy. Most girls think he is cute . .in an intellectual british way. Yeah i definately recommend him!
