This class is very hard. The material can be interesting at times, but there is just way too many vocab. The professor knows his material very well, but it is just very hard to sit through and grasp. Hard GE to take, immense studing will not help unless you are able to pick these things up fast.

Professor Davis is very passionate about the subject. Though he sometimes wandered off topic during lecture, it was usually just to tell an interesting story about some of the work with geophysics that he had done. ESS1 is very enjoyable especially if you attend the field trips. The labs are pretty straightforward and you can get the required texts on amazon for a good price.

I took HC 35 with Newman and all in all, I liked him a lot. I am not a science major, therefore I wasn't too fond of the course overall. I honestly took it because it fit my schedule and for no other reason. I liked him and I liked some of the topics he covered. I think he's funny and sure, his jokes are corny, but they're funny because he finds them so funny. I think it's funnier when we totally miss the punchline. I feel lucky to have had a class with him. His office hours are a little frustrating as getting a straight answer out of him seems to be near impossible. However, he does make time for you and he is very respectful of his students. Just, please, for all of us, don't argue with him about some point that he most likely knows much better than you do. I would take him, just prepare for some boring lectures. You learn a lot and the videos aren't bad. He fell asleep in one video, but again, so did I so I don't really blame him.

Professor Rhodes is very adept at teaching and explaining concepts. This class is not very difficult if you apply yourself and do maybe do a few readings and pay attention in lectures. However, it is not an easy-peasy class, so don't just take it because it's a GE, take it because you're interested in the material and want to learn it. The field trips are very helpful in actually understanding the concepts discussed in lectures, and he almost gives you the answers to all of his questions for his little write-up. His (1) midterm and final are all multiple choice, and he gives review questions in class. Overall, he's a good professor.
