Fall 2019 - Love the professor. Boyd really makes this class- he is so enthusiastic about what he teaches and it's obvious. He really tries to teach people rather than focus on grades. He is super funny and I love his anecdotes. As for the class- GO TO CLASS. That's probably the biggest difference between having a good grade and a bad grade. And when you're at class, PAY ATTENTION. Basically everything on his exams are based directly from lecture. The readings are incredibly helpful and really get down to the nitty gritty of the legislation. I would say if you are really really short on time you can skip some but they are actually all enjoyable reads that I would highly recommend reading even just for fun. The readings really cement the ideas and clear up on some things.

Fall 2024 - Honestly, one of my favorite professors at UCLA. Garrison is both a super engaging lecturer and incredibly knowledgable in the field. The class itself is less amazing. The content is super engaging and again Garrison presents it well, but the graded portions of the class can feel kinda BS at some points. The midterm/final required quite a bit of studying, and you had to know a few random ins and outs of environmental regulation history or specific clauses, which was a little annoying. Worse than that though are the challenge problems. There are two, and he gives you an environmental act, for our first one the Clean Air Act, and has you essentially analyze the EXACT language of the statute. We had almost no preparation on how to do this, and the grading felt super harsh (I think the average was 68%?) for something worth 20% of our grade. This class is DEF not an easy A, but it is super interesting! Also, the TAs absolutely suck and are no help, so please do not waste your time with them. One of them would just bring her dog to lecture and then ghost my emails for two weeks - smh.
