Later 19th-Century Poetry
Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Enforced requisites: courses 10A, 10B, 10C. Developments in English poetic genres in relation to significant movements such as aestheticism, decadence, feminism, and imperialism from middle decades of 19th century to turn of 20th century. P/NP or letter grading.

I strongly recommend that only 4th year/seniors take Colacurcio. He has dry wit and biting humor; he cusses in class and makes fun of himself, the authors, the students and anyone else under the sun. He does care about his students and he loves his job please be warned: THIS IS NOT AN EASY CLASS. He gives out "shitty little quizzes" (his term), essays, midterm, final and extra reading essay. The reading load is so overwhelming, you will feel like you're back in the 10-series. It's VERY DIFFICULT TO PULL OFF AN A. I think everyone should take at least professor like Cola before they graduate (especially if ENGL is your major/minor) but I can't imagine a first/second year surviving through his course without wrecking his/her GPA. Enjoy! He's a blast :)

Professor Dimuro was one the first professors I had at UCLA and after having taken classes with a variety of other professors, I'm going back for more. Yeah, he canceled class a couple of times, but is it that big of a deal? Catch up on reading at Powell. Considering what you get with Dimuro--humor, lively discussion, concern for his students--the good outweighs the minimally irritating.

Looby is a very interesting professor. He's very intelligent, and very friendly. His grading is easier than many professors and TA's; I pulled an A- in this class when I expected probably a B or B-. How boring his lectures are depend on how willing you are to engage in class; if you enjoy speaking and you do the readings, you'll enjoy this. He doesn't penalize for quiet kids, but he does take roll, requiring you to be there. Good teacher for academically minded kids, if you absolutely hate lecture, avoid this professor.

I don't understand who would enjoy taking a class with this man. Sure, he's very knowledgeable, but he goes way off on various tangents (boring tangents, that is), and talks in an extremely monotone voice. I seriously could not stand this class. In regards to work load, its pretty easy because he only assings two, 5-6 page papers due with two one page explications. Because of this, you don't really need to read all the novels he assigns. There's no midterm, and no final. And therefore, no incentive to do the reading. I didn't find his choice of novels interesting, or diverse. ONCE AGAIN, THIS GUY IS SOOOOOOOO BORING. THIS CLASS IS SO BORING. Avoid at all costs. Also, he sort of attempts to encourage class discussion, but when students respond to his questions, or share their interpretations, he shuts people down really fast. I personally found this very arrogant and rude. This was the first class that I did NOT feel comfortable going to office hours. Again, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
