Winter 2019 - I took Makdisi for 119 in Winter 19 and studied abroad with him in London over Summer 19. He's an absolutely incredible professor and he's clearly so passionate about what he does. There were a wide range of readings and most were super interesting, but even the duller ones weren't too long and he always had a really interesting take on them that made me view them in a new light. He's really approachable and kind, and always helpful. Super chill as long as you stay on top of reading and are clearly putting in an effort, and he'll always go the extra mile for you. Easy class as well, with only a paper and project for 169 and a midterm, final paper, and project for 119. If you can, take any class he's teaching! You won't regret it.

Fall 2020 - I loved this class! Shaub was so supportive and knowledgeable. The lecture involves slides and focuses heavily on student discussion. I really like the way he runs his discussions because he knows when to change the topic when students don't have much to say about something. The class had a midterm essay, a small presentation, and a final essay. There are a lot of readings (almost a book a week) but they were really interesting and you weren't really tested on whether you read or not. Shaub wants to challenge his students to be better writers and readers, so that's where the difficulty of the class comes in. I would definitely take a class with him again!
