I loved Allen! He made all those Shakespeare plays I've read a million times come to life (Cheesy I know, but that's how it felt). His accent, his passion, everything just makes you feel like you could be in England. His grading wasn't too harsh as long as you went to class. His final was identifying passages. I would definitely recommend him and hope to take at least one more class with him before graduating.

Braunmuller is the most difficult English teacher I have ever had. However, his lectures are fascinating and I learned so much in his class. He knows his Shakespeare. If you're up for a challenge, take his class. However, if you're T.A. is Jason Morphew, run for the hills. He is the WORST TA I have ever had. Braunmuller's class wouldn't have been nearly as difficult had our TA prepared us for the midterm and the final. Our discussion sections were a complete waste of time and had correlated with Braunmuller's lectures only once. Braunmuller=Amazing Jason Morphew (TA)=set up for failure

I heard from some friends that Professor Cunningham was an excellent prof (for Milton), so I signed up for her [Shakespeare] class. Her knowledge of Shakespeare was unimpressive, even though all she did was brag about all of the years of research she performed. She didn't bring any value to the class. Lectures were a complete waste of time. Although she seemed personable and approachable during lecture, the content of the lectures themselves was lackluster--her analysis of Romeo & Juliet was barely surface-level, hardly touching on any themes. Instead, she simply skimmed along, relating personal experiences and feelings to Romeo's longing for Juliet, rather than examining the language at a closer level. Like many professors, her syllabus was far too ambitious, and we did not read through the plays that she had laid out for us--those that we did not read were bought back from the bookstore at 10 cents each, and they were only available in Ackerman new.

Professor Dickey is very knowledgeable and I definitely enjoyed that he made the class very interactive. Going to class is important since he loves to give out quizzes. I liked that his papers topics were on very short passages, thus forcing students to really close read. The only problem I had was that he didnt' have too much structure with the TAs. I had Holly Moyer and I'm telling you now AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. She's condescending, takes forever to answer e-mails and is a very harsh grader. She wants graduate level work but doesn't work with her students to achieve this. Other than that, it was a good class and as long as you read the final was pretty simple.

To all you who believe Professor Little needs to be called out on this, email his supervisor *************, he needs to hear more. I honestly was shocked at this guy. First of all, he is "funny", but his humor is derived from claiming he sees a therapist and has issues. Also, he not only plays favorites, but like many recounted, he gave A's to 14 people for FREE and exempted them from 35% of our grade (the final), because he believed they were great and deserved it. Free A in Upper Div English class? 1. what a joke, what does our degree even mean if you get a "gold star" freebee A? Or that you took the final? One of the two. 2. Illegal and Unprofessional 3. UCLA = joke. Professor Little shows grading in this major IS subjective through this, and that by kissing up and going to office hours it is possible to achieve an 'A'. Aside from having issues, putting down students (he does not agree with anything people say. Some kids in our class even read criticism and came to class claiming this stuff as 'their own ideas', when it came from professional minds, and he would knock it down within 45 seconds. IS LATE ALL THE TIME. Does not begin lecture for about 30 minutes because he is absorbed in talking to and picking on random students to make the class laugh. Out of an hour and a half lecture, the average the lecture would last was 40 minutes. This irritated me so much, especially because I am paying good money for my "education". I do not recommend Little in any way, shape, or form except as a court jester.

Fall 2024 - Some people will staunchly sing Watson's praises. However, I'm taking his class and he dropped a lengthy midterm on us four days before we're due to take it. You'd need to memorize a sonnet word for word, be able to identify passages, write a short essay, AND recall his 2-hour lectures in order to answer written questions. He will not warn you of this beforehand. This is just the midterm. You also have to write two essays (one short, one long) and take a final exam. I'm sure this is great for people obsessed with Shakespeare and already familiar with his work. If that isn't you, maybe pick a different class or instructor.
