Fall 2023 - Dr. De is super sweet and approachable inside and outside of class. You will not feel intimidated at all when asking her questions for clarity about a prompt or asking for advice. The workload was very light but ofc it is an engcomp class so there's a lot of writing, but it was all spaced out well. Here is a breakdown of the 3 papers assigned (which you're given a few weeks to write ranging from 4-6 pages but tbh I ended up writing way more): 1. Paper One/Analytical Summary. Theme: Performing Female and Male Bodies 2. Paper Two/ Critical Argument. Theme: Undoing Gender and Performing Difference 3. Paper Three: Analytical Argument. Theme: Performing Internationalism and Race At times, I felt that her advice during the one-on-one conferences contradicted stuff she said previously during office hours, which confused me when I needed to edit my writing. I would recommend asking her to type some of her suggestions on Google Documents so you can refer back to them when editing your paper. List every suggestion and do them!! This will bump up your grade. Sometimes she can be quite blunt when giving criticism but I felt that it genuinely improved my writing.  I enjoyed choosing our own prompts and her prompts were super interesting, helping me stay engaged in the class. Since there are around 20 people in the class, you can expect a lot of discussion on the paper topics but dw you're usually given time to come up with your answers before speaking. There is a grade rubric but I would prioritize improving your papers. since that takes up most if not your final grade. She is very passionate about student's success and learning in the class, and I highly respect that. She held good expectations for us and I could tell she saw great potential in every student, which I greatly appreciated. I loved taking this class!
