Winter 2017 - If you are lucky enough to get a spot in her class please do take it! She is an absolutely amazing person and professor. From movies to video games and Facebook and Snapchat to artificial intelligence, she covered fascinating topics that we relate to and gave them deeper socio-cultural bases. Her discussions are captivating, her class content is super interesting and her grading is fair and comprehensive. Participation matters in her class and even though the idea of voicing your opinions in front of everyone is absolutely daunting, she brings out the best in you and encourages you without any pressure. Unexpectedly, I genuinely felt like contributing as much as I could. She makes you feel passionately about what you are writing and thus gets you really involved in it. She understands that writing, as a process, works differently for different people, and is very supportive and helpful. Her class has helped me improve exponentially and look at writing with more depth and perspective. Definitely one of the best classes I have taken here so far!

Fall 2021 - I really enjoyed this class! Professor Martinez is extremely sweet and engaging and it is clear that he works hard to make the class interesting and straightforward. We focused on relevant issues and frequently discussed current events, an aspect I especially enjoyed. There were quite a few readings for this course but they weren't too long and were usually pretty fascinating. Martinez only assigned three major writing assignments the whole quarter and gave ample time and feedback for each. Overall I would highly recommend this professor and class, on top of being actually interesting and relatively easy Martinez is so kind and funny!

Winter 2016 - She has favorites. I took this class thinking I would improve as a writer but no nothing o that sort. She encourages her students to not worry about what grade they get and just write the papers without asking too many questions. If you ask questions, she will not answer saying, "I don't know, what do you think?" Like shut up, you'll be the one grading my paper, not me. She treats office hours like it's mandatory, lady, we have other classes too. I can't be coming to office hours every week. In fact, she doesn't even have office hours, you have to make an appointment with her in advance. I felt like if you didn't agree with her on something, she sorta disliked you and liked the majority of the class that kissed up to her. She is a hypocrite, she says don't do this but then when a certain student does that she says it's okay in that context but not otherwise. But then again, if you are really concerned about your grade then literally just do everything she ask of and you'll get a decent grade. Don't try to add anything on, just agree with everything. Be fake!!

Fall 2023 - I loved this class. This quarter, she created her own curriculum that was focused on wellness. Though it was challenging due to the fact that homework was due before each day of class, I actually learned so much about how to write at a professional level. This is definitely not the type of class that you was to procrastinate in, however, and it does require a lot of your time. Things I loved about her class: * She had us start our final project super early, and all of the material we learned in class was for the purpose of preparing us for our final project (scholarly essay and public facing project). * She taught us how to write and use our own voices, while ensuring that we were being critical thinkers. * She allowed us to create our own rubric for our final project. * She actually cares about you as an individual. Things I found challenging: * The workload was gnarly, but definitely manageable. The readings were minimal, and all of the material we had to read and watch were actually super interesting. It's definitely not busywork, which I love. * She grades heavily on participation, but I loved the fact that it wasn't about "Who can talk the most?" or "Who sounds the smartest?" She encouraged everyone to not only speak and voice their response, but to actively listen to other colleagues. It was great.
