Animal Communication
Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Requisites: Mathematics 3C or 32A, and Physics 1C and 4BL, or 6C or 6CH. Physical properties of animal signals and physiological mechanisms underlying their generation and reception. Lectures treat signal analysis, signal transmission, and receptor design in light of constraints placed on each sensory modality. Examples of communication systems using visual, auditory, chemical, electrical, and magnetic cues, with emphasis on biological adaptations for efficiently signaling species-specific information. S/U or letter grading.
