Animal Environmental Physiology
Description: Lecture, three hours; laboratory, six hours. Requisites: Chemistry 14D, or 30B and 30BL, Life Sciences 1, 2, 3, 4, and 23L, or Life Sciences 7A, 7B, 7C, and 23L, 30B or Mathematics 3C or 32A, Physics 1C and 4BL, or 5B or 6C or 6CH. Not open for credit to students with credit for Physiological Science 166. Designed for Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution majors. Introduction to physiology (function) of animal organs and organ systems, with emphasis on environmental interactions and ecological adaptations. Letter grading.

Spring 2024 - Dr. Dines is such an great professor, I am shocked there are not more reviews for this class praising him. The class was very small, and quiet, so I found myself participating often, which you could tell he greatly appreciated. This isn't a super easy class, but if you go to lecture and pay good attention, you should get a good grade! Also, the experiment portion of the class was super fun and engaging and I'm very glad for the experience.

Winter 2016 - I absolutely loved this class and got a lot out of it. However, I did not like Professor Gordon's methods of teaching. I felt like his teaching style was extremely disorganized and unhelpful. The first two weeks we spent talking about cloud formation, the second two weeks were spent talking about a graph and then neither were on the first midterm. The only reason I knew any of the information was because I read the book. I understand that information should come from many sources, including the text book but I firmly believe that I should get some information from lecture. I felt that the lectures were a waste of my time and didn't provide any help in either the lab sections or for the tests. As well, I didn't find Professor Gordon very helpful in the lab section of this class. I understand that it's his job to be critical of the projects so that we can improve upon them and make them better. However, I felt like he unnecessarily criticized projects when in fact he didn't have the information or knowledge to back it up. The TA's were much more helpful in this regard. The last complaint I have about Professor Gordon was his utter disrespect for everyone's time. He showed up at least 10 minutes late to every single class period. Every day his excuse was that there was traffic but if all of the students were able to make it to class on time, he should also be able to make it on time.

I took LS1 with Lloyd-Smith and he was a great professor! On the first day of class he asked us all what fields we were going into to see what kind of students he was dealing with, and when he saw that most of us were pre-med, he made sure that in every lecture he spent the last ten or fifteen minutes on a medically related example. He is very fair- he puts extra credit on the exams to compensate for any ambiguous questions, very willingly throws out any quiz questions that people find difficult or unfair, and he holds extra office hours before the exam. LS1 was really boring, but his section of the course was the most interesting, and he has a sense of humor and was the only professor in my LS1 class who podcasted. Take him if you get the chance!
