I'm really not that surprised with all of the negativity directed at Prof. Allen on this site. After all, most of the people here are just like him - only they inhabit the other end of the political spectrum, the side which seems to, ironically, have as many closed-minded people as their right-wing rivals. Hypocritical, if you ask me... I find Allen's take on economics far more logical and sensible than any of the other views shoved down my throat every time I have the misfortune of walking by Ackerman Union. If his lectures make you fall asleep, take some ritalin. Basically, don't go into his lectures with a closed mind. I mean, if someone spends more time researching, studying, and theorizng on a subject than you've been alive, there might just be some truth in his conservative views. On tests, he is hard, but fair. Grading on a curve only insults a student's intelligence, in my humble view.

I took Econ 1 with Baim and he is an awesome professor. His very entertaining and makes lecture very fun to go to. He lectures really well and I love his teaching style. Truth is, I didn't do very well, but for sure his exams are very simple, as in know the concepts and do well. My problem was I had trouble applying the concepts I already knew so when I took my exams, the short answers would hurt me. I guess I didn't answer them thoroughly or got my point across. His tests are T/F, MC and like 3 short answers. I look forward to taking other econ classes with him and I will definitely try harder the next time around! :)

Spring 2024 - I came in having taken AP Macro in high school, so I knew all of the content before the first midterm, so I stopped going to class after Week 2. However, Prof. Boswell's lecture slides were enough to understand the course content, so I had no issue with studying. Tests were generally fair, and she chose not to curve the class down, which was great. Overall decent class, even though I went all of seven times.

Spring 2016 - If I had the chance to go back and re-plan my schedule, I would not have taken Econ with Patrick Convery. I think that the material that was taught was interesting but his lectures are extremely boring (and pointless because he puts the lectures up online) and he just reads off the slides. There is no homework in his class but there are suggested reading assignments that no one really does (but I found them helpful because Convery was not helpful at all). There are 2 midterms each worth 25% of your grade and the final that's worth 50% of your grade. I didn't do that well on the fist midterm and when I went to go see him to talk about what I did wrong and to go over the concepts, he didn't really answer my questions and I found the other meetings I had with him were unhelpful. The TA's for this quarter were all very unhelpful and the only recommendations that Convery gave to me was to get a tutor (who cost $70/hour). He also purposefully said that he would make the second midterm and final harder so that there was a larger distribution in terms of grades amongst the class. I would suggest not to take Econ 1 with Convery and spare yourself the tears and stress.
