MATH 33B EVALUATION: This is the first time I have ever submitted a review on bruin walk in the 2 years that I have been at UCLA so far. And the reason is to warn you to AVOID TAKING THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. He get's his lectures straight from the book but is still able to mess them up (presenting incorrect facts, answering basic conceptual questions incorrectly). He's a nice guy who will try his best to answer your questions and get through the course but teaching just isn't his cup of tea. DON'T TAKE BAO UNLESS YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER CHOICE.

I took Astro 3 with Professor Fitzgerald and enjoyed it. The class overall is mostly memorizing powerpoint slides for the tests. The class is broken up into 10% weekly reading quizzes (easy) 10%, Labs (tedious but easy) 20%, Midterm 1/Midterm 2 (Multiple choice and easy) 20% each, and a Final (Multiple choice and easy) 30%. I ended up with 92% on quizzes/labs, a 46/50 on Midterm 1, a 41/50 on Midterm 2, and a 101/110 on the Final and finished with an A+. I would recommend the class.

Class: Math 33A I thought he was kinda frustrating because what he taught in class didn't help with the homework, and the homework only kinda represented the material on the tests. As an athlete with a tutor I thought it was pretty doable; I got an A- in the class and never really knew what was going on in lecture. Guess that goes to show how big a difference a better teacher can make.

Class: Physics 1B I thought he was a really good teacher; he seemed to put in a lot of effort into helping us understand and even did demonstrations. Who does demonstrations anymore? It was pretty easy to get good grades on the homework, though it could be pretty tedious sometimes. His tests were hard though. I got a C+ in this class but deserved it; I didn't do the homework, and that 10% of easy A would probably have been helpful.

You can also look up G Weltman for more reviews, as that seems to be the proper page to post reviews on since it has Engineering 183EW as an option for course taken. Professor Weltman is a pretty cool guy. He credits himself as one of the founders of MMORPGs, so that in and of itself is pretty baller. The grade breakdown of the class is like: 5% - participation/attendance (participation in discussion section, attendance in class via a sign up sheet) 24% - 2 papers (6+ pages), 1 on Hardin's Tragedy of the Commons relating to a Californian issue from a list of issues you pick from and another on an ethical case study from a list you choose from (12% each). These are graded by your TAs, so hopefully your TA isn't a hard grader, though they all seem to be. 24% - team research paper, topic is picked from a list given on day 1 of class. Be sure to get rid of slackers/dgafers from your group asap or else it hurts EVERYONE. 5% - team research paper oral presentation, pretty fun, probably graded easily by your TA. 16% - midterm, write fast because you only have 2 hours to finish 10 short answer/essay questions. The grading is super easy though (more or less how much you complete of the test is = to your grade). 26% - final, same as the midterm, just 12 questions instead of 10 and 3 hours to do it instead of 10. Professor Browne does 2 case study lectures before the first midterm, so be sure to go to those if you want to know the answers to some of the midterm questions. He is also a bit more animated than Professor Weltman and reminds me of Penguin from Batman Returns. Overall a pretty easy "A" if you do well on your 2 papers in your discussion (ask your TA for help since you are given a chance to revise your initial turn in of the paper), don't have a group full of slackers for your group project, and can write fast on the midterm/final.
