Nonlinear Photonics
Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour; outside study, seven hours. Requisite: course 170A. Recommended: course 271. Nonlinear optical susceptibilities. Coupled-wave and coupled-mode theories. Crystal optics, electro-optics, and magneto-optics. Nonlinear optical interactions, sum- and difference-frequency generation, harmonic and parametric generation, stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering, field-induced index changes and self-phase modulation. Nonlinear photonic devices. Nonlinear guided-wave photonics and devices. Letter grading.

I took 6B with him. He teaches well,he doesn't confuse you, and he tells you which sections of the book to concentrate on. His midterms and final were all pretty easy if you understand the material taught during lecture(and study off the tests from the test bank). HOWEVER, he only gives out a certain amount of A's. Even if you actually EARNED the A, if you are not in the top 25% of the class, then you're given a B/B+....which really sucks because you earned a higher grade. So if you want an A in the class, you ought to do REALLY REALLY WELL on all his tests. [oh yeah, his homework is really easy. There's even some extra credit!]
