Disability and Popular Culture

Description: Lecture, four hours. Drawing from disability studies, media studies, and theories of representation, examination of increasing visibility of people with disabilities in popular culture. How disability is represented and who gets to represent it. Analysis and critique of representations of people with disabilities in late 20th and early 21st century cinema and television to understand functioning of representation in popular culture. Development of critical media literacy skills. P/NP or letter grading.
