Engaging Gender Performances in East Asian Theater through Digital Storytelling
Description: Seminar, three hours. Requisite: satisfaction of Entry-Level Writing requirement. First years and sophomores preferred. Study is interdisciplinary at intersection of theater and performance studies, gender studies, Asian studies, and digital humanities. Analysis of East Asian performances through lens of gender and offers opportunity to rethink and challenge existing Euro-American cultural hegemony and develop digital skills to effective converse with public. Students engage influential gender theories as preliminary analytical training. Focus on case students of different performance genres including Peking opera, Kbuki, Takarazuka, K-pop, Buto, and model opera. Introduction to concept of digital storytelling and relevant digital tools and platforms. Students submit multiple digital assignments to analyze performance pieces through digital tools and manage multifaceted project independently to develop transferable skills. Letter grading.
