Literature and Writing: Great Books from World at Large
Description: Seminar, four hours. Enforced requisite: English Composition 3. Not open for credit to students with credit for course 1D or 2DW. Study and discussion of major literary texts usually overlooked in courses that focus only on canon of Western literature, with emphasis on literary analysis and expository writing. Texts from at least three of following areas read in any given term: African, Caribbean, East Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern literature. Texts may include works by authors such as Achebe, Can Xue, Desai, Emecheta, Kincaid, Neruda, Ngugi, Pak, Rushdie, and El Saadawi. Analysis of texts includes focus on structures, processes, and practices that generate inter-group inequities or conflicts as well as those that support fairness and inclusiveness. Satisfies Writing II requirement. Letter grading.

Sina is a great teacher. There was never a dull moment in class, and his discussions are always interesting. The questions he brings up in class are challenging; trust me, you will learn to think and speak differently by the end of taking his class. He's got a witty sense of humor and if you don't like to talk or participate, beware. You are going to be picked on! But seriously, I think that even if you aren't an avid reader or a big fan of Charles Dickens, he's the kind of teacher who will motivate you to become a better writer. Great class, I highly recommend this for anyone who is interested in literature or wants to improve/expand writing skills.

Spring 2021 - I honestly cannot recommend Professor Rahmani enough. I took her COM LIT 4CW Class and I surprisingly liked it despite not usually being a fan of writing. She finished class early pretty often and it consisted of discussions about what we read (usually short articles) in breakout rooms and the main zoom. Our grade was based on participation (20% of class grade), 7 short essays (350-500 words, 35% of grade), a midterm paper (1000-1200 words, 15% of grade), and a final paper (1500-1800 words, 30% of grade). We had to read a couple of books but they were fairly interesting and I only had to actually buy one (around $20) because it wasn't available online. You should definitely take her class if you need a GE or writing 2 requirement fulfilled!

Winter 2016 - Dr. Soares was funny, engaged, passionate, and cared deeply about the topic and her students. She assigned a very reasonable amount of reading and papers, which she graded very fairly. She was very flexible, and worked the class around the needs of the students. She was really wonderful, I highly suggest taking a class with her if you can!

Excellent class! I really enjoyed the reading selection that Duncan had us read as it was very interesting. Most of his papers were fun to write. You will definitely get better at writing if you participate in this class. Go to his office hours! They are almost essential to doing well in the class and getting a good grade.
