Ancient Historiography: Theory and Practice
Description: Lecture, three hours. Study of theory, practice, and development of writing history in cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. Focus is literary, centered on questions of genre and rhetoric. Encourages appreciation for how ancient historiography relates to other ancient genres (epic, biography, oratory). Readings may draw widely from various authors, including Herodotus, Thucydides, Livy, Tacitus, and others. Letter grading.
