Chicanos in Film/Video
Description: (Formerly numbered Chicana and Chicano Studies M114.) (Same as Film and Television M117.) Lectures/screenings, five hours; discussion, one hour. Goal is to gain nuanced understanding of Chicano cinema as political, socioeconomic, cultural, and aesthetic practice. Examination of representation of Mexican Americans and Chicanos in four Hollywood genres--silent greaser films, social problem films, Westerns, and gang films--that are major genres that account for films about or with Mexican Americans produced between 1908 and 1980. Examination of recent Chicano-produced films that subvert or signify on these Hollywood genres, including Zoot Suit, Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, and Born in East L.A. Consideration of shorter, more experimental work that critiques Hollywood image of Chicanos. Guest speakers include both pioneer and up-and-coming filmmakers. P/NP or letter grading.

Winter 2023 - Amazing professor and class! I highly recommend Professor Celina Martinez. I am graduating this year but if I could take her classes in the future I definitely would. I have taken other classes that are so packed with information there is no way I can remember any of the content but Professor Martinez connects the content through each lecture. There are weekly journals that help with reflecting on the content of the class and two main projects. I enjoyed this class and learned about Latinx culture through films, two textbooks, weekly readings, lectures, and discussions. A great class!
