Core Seminar: Linguistic Anthropology

Description: Seminar, three hours. Designed to familiarize graduate students with central theoretical and methodological concepts in linguistic anthropology. Study of classic and contemporary texts, focusing on relationship between language and culture. Focus on linguistic anthropological theory, with additional discussion of methodologies within and related to discipline including ethnographic fieldwork, conversational analysis, syntactic analysis, sociophonetic analysis, sociolinguistic interviewing, and philosophical approaches. Letter grading.
