Study of Culture
Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Requisite: course 9. Designed for juniors/seniors. Twentieth-century elaboration and development of concept of culture. Examination of five major paradigms: culture as human capacity, as patterns and products of behavior, as systems of meaning and cognition, as generative structure and semiotic system, as component in social action and reality construction. (Core course for cultural field.) P/NP or letter grading.

All right, she's an okay teacher. I absolutely do NOT recommend her to ANYONE. Lectures are word for word her slides, the readings aren't all that interesting (and rather useless for the class as a whole), and her midterm exam was ESCRCIATING! The midterm was filled with vague "critique this passage as an anthropologist" questions... seems easy right? Imagine my surprise when my coherent, cogent, well thought out critique of Margaret Mead and was met with 7 points taken off with NO comments! OH! If you take this class do whatever you can to NOT have Camila as your TA. She is absolutely TERRIBLE! Not only was she useless (she wouldn't answer questions if we didn't participate), she also LAUGHED AT US when we DID ask questions! I would leave every discussion feeling like a child who had just been sent to time out. She was no help at all!

Fall 2023 - This was a cool class. Not too difficult, not too boring. Professor Thein is extremely passionate and a good lecturer. I thought the content was really interesting, although a lot of it is about her and her own studies (makes sense but feel like it would have been cool to learn about other topics at times). The assignments include four response papers to a set of prompts you can choose from and a final group project. They're not very difficult and I tended to just go through the slides and video recordings of the lectures to knock them out pretty fast. This is definitely a manageable course, with lots of extra credit too! Would recommend this professor.
