I lived in 640 Veteran for the 2019-2020 school year. Overall, I wasn't a huge fan of the apartment.
For starters, my apartment was quite worn-down even before I moved in. The paint on the walls and general apartment quality was very poor. One of the built-in desks in my bedroom spontaneously broke within a few months; some further inspection showed that the desk was supported by tiny wooden planks no beefier than small sticks. This theme extended throughout the rest of the apartment.
The area is quite noisy. For one, you live right on Veteran, which due to the choppiness of the pavement, results in a lot of road noise from cars driving by. I also had the misfortune of living here during the year when the cemetery across the street was being renovated: this meant very noisy construction equipment (bulldozers, trucks, etc.) starting at 5:30 AM on every weekday. Ear plugs became a requirement for light sleepers such as myself. I'm not sure if this construction is still ongoing or not, but hopefully you'll be luckier.
Overall, the apartment was quite beat up and was not a particularly pleasant living experience, but thankfully it was inexpensive enough that I could forgive most of these issues.
Anyone looking for a place to live for Spring and/or Summer? I'm subletting my spot at 640 Veteran Ave. Rent is $477/month, 2bed 2bath, 4 other roommates, couple blocks away from UCLA Shuttle bus. Female roommate preferred. Please email me if you're interested!
